Borrowed Time

Ten expert ideas for how to spend your extra hour when daylight savings ends.

Time is free, but it’s priceless; you can’t own it, but you can use it. You can’t keep it, but you can spend it. Once you’ve lost it, you can never get it back— Harvey Mackay

Whether it’s the sun setting before the work day wraps up, or the jolt of our internal clocks adjusting to the time shift just as winter’s chill sets in, for many of us, daylight savings feels as dreary as the darkened evenings it brings. Nevertheless, there is one bright spot when it comes to turning our clocks back in November: the extra hour we’ve artificially created from the ritual, which lands on a Sunday each year.

In anticipation of daylight savings, this Sunday, November 3rd, below we’ve put together ten  suggestions for how to make the most of your extra hour of borrowed time:

  1. Plan a weekend upstate at Eastwind Oliverea Valley and take the scenic route home.

  1. Schedule an 8am yoga class and then get in line early at Apollo Bagels.

  1. Plan a Saturday night out with friends. Have that extra drink at Milady’s you might otherwise skip, knowing you have an extra hour of sleep.

  1. Spend an extended morning in bed with a homemade latte. May we suggest the new Oracle Jet by Breville?

  1. Officially transition your closet to your winter wardrobe. Donate any clothing you haven’t worn in the last year.

  1. Grab your friends for a round at Swingers Crazy Golf. Winner buys the first round of drinks.

  1. Enjoy an extra long lunch at your favorite fine dining restaurant. We suggest Le Jardinier in New York City and NoMad Restaurant in London.

  1. Call that friend you’ve been meaning to connect with and have a proper catch up.

  1. Light an Apotheke candle and relax with a 60 minute soak in the tub.

  1. Scroll through Instagram guilt-free. Stalking your ex doesn’t count when we have an extra hour in the day, right?
