When it comes to reshaping the travel media landscape, few voices are as influential as Kelsy Chauvin. Last month, RHC had the privilege of hosting her for an eye-opening Q&A session.
With a portfolio that spans LGBTQ+ interests, gastronomy, arts, culture, and cannabis, Kelsy’s journey through the world of storytelling is as diverse as the topics she covers. From co-authoring Fodor’s Brooklyn Guide to contributing to Rand McNally’s America Travel series, she’s made her mark as a thought leader in the travel industry. Her work as president of the New York Travel Writers Association, and as a vocal advocate in the International Gay + Lesbian Travel Association, has also established her as a powerful advocate for inclusivity in the industry.
During her visit, Kelsy offered us a glimpse into today’s evolving travel media landscape, noting a distinct shift from ultra-luxury escapes to the rising demand for “accessible luxury”—a trend that’s spreading through multiple industries, from fashion to tourism.
Beyond the buzzwords, she emphasized something much more meaningful: the need for truly inclusive storytelling, particularly when it comes to queer travelers and women of color. While the hospitality industry has made strides in showcasing diversity, Kelsy is eager to hear more from authentic voices who can speak to the intersection of queerness and hospitality with nuance and integrity.
Drawing from her extensive experience on press trips, Kelsy shared that even the smallest gestures, like including pronouns on name tags, can create a more welcoming environment for everyone. She’s passionate about seeing these practices embraced across the board, urging hotels and businesses to not just celebrate their diverse communities but actively support them, rather than merely profiting from them. “It’s genuine and important,” Kelsy told the RHC team. “It’s time to bring these positive voices and forces into the storytelling.”
As the travel industry continues to evolve, voices like Kelsy’s will be at the forefront, advocating for representation that reflects the full spectrum of human experience.
Thank you, Kelsy, for your insights and inspiration. We can’t wait to see what stories you bring to life next.
